Nthakomwa has told the committee that at about 8:19 p.m. he received a phone call from retired Major General John Msonthi, who began by offering condolences for the loss of his friend.
He says he was confused because, to his knowledge, the aircraft had not yet been found. However, Msonthi allegedly told him the wreckage had already been located and went on to describe how the aircraft's wing struck a tree before it slid about 80 metres uphill.
Nthakomwa says the information deeply disturbed him, but he chose not to tell anyone, including the bereaved family, because he doubted its accuracy and did not want to cause unnecessary panic.
He tells the committee that it was only the following morning, when President Lazarus Chakwera addressed the nation, that he accepted the information after the President officially confirmed that the aircraft had been found with no survivors.
