A Malawian woman, yet to be identified, has died this morning during repatriation from South Africa after crossing Mwanza Border, marking the second female fatality in the ongoing voluntary evacuation exercise.
Addressing the media in Lilongwe today, Commissioner and Secretary for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) Wilson Mollen confirmed the death, saying a clinical facility has been set up at Mwanza to establish the cause, which is yet to be determined.
The first case involved another Malawian woman who died in Zimbabwe while returning to Malawi under the same voluntary repatriation programme with Mollen saying both incidents are under review.
“We have set a clinical facility at Mwanza to assess what happened. At the moment, we do not have details on the cause of the death,” said Mollen.
Meanwhile, Mollen says government, with partners, has since repatriated at least 21,000 Malawians, with K5 billion from Treasury used for bus hire and about K7 billion spent in total including donations.
